Welcome to the February 2020 edition of Classroom News! Each month during the school year, a teacher at HLS will share what’s going on in her classroom to highlight neat projects and activities students are doing. This month, let’s see what Mrs. Montoya has to say about third and fourth grade.

We are currently working on a new writing project featuring students’ stuffed animals. I had the students bring a stuffed animal from home. This stuffed friend is going to be the main character in a new picture book that the students will write. While the stuffed animals were at school, we practiced drawing them and started discussing what our story would be about.

Once we had done a few practice drawings, we started on the rough draft, or practice pages, for our picture books. Most of the students have a good start on their rough draft pages.

Over the next few days, we will start working on our good copies. When the pages are finished, we will design our covers and write the About the Author pages. I am excited to hear and see all of the wonderful stories the students have written.

Then when we are all finished, we will invite the stuffed animals back to the classroom so they can be there when we share the stories written about them.

After Christmas break we started a construction project for our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) time. I gave each group some newspaper, a small amount of tape, and a time limit. I told them I wanted them to work together to build the tallest tower they could. The students designed several different types of towers, and we had great discussions and teamwork during the project.

During STEM time we have also been working on creating a video game with Bloxels. We started this project by designing our pixel character for our game. We had to have a standing, walking, and jumping version of this character. Then we created a second character, the enemy or bad guy, for our game. After we had these two characters finished, we started to write the story behind our game and design the boards that would be our game. Finally we were able to start putting all of this together on our iPads. We are all very excited about this project and love seeing our own video game come to life.

These are just a few of the things going on in our classroom right now! Stay up-to-date with our classroom by following HLS on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to see photos from the classroom each week.
