What We’re Reading is a blog series where we talk about the books Hampton Lutheran School teachers are reading out loud in their classrooms. Here’s what Mrs. Montoya has been reading to her third and fourth grade class since the beginning of the school year.
We started out this year by reading The Castle in the Attic by Elizabeth Winthrop. I decided to read this book to go along with our classroom’s castle and medieval theme for the school year. After we finished this book, we started on the second book, The Battle for the Castle by Elizabeth Winthrop. We are about halfway through the second book.
I chose these books to start out the year because of the theme of our classroom. I like how these books are introducing castle vocabulary to the students, such as allure (wall walk), portcullis, battlements, arrowslits, balley. We are also learning about different jobs or occupations found in a castle.
The students love to read. I find that when we read out loud, they always ask if there is a second book or more of the story. I found this true of The Castle in the Attic as well, and I had the second book ready and waiting for them.
