This year in third and fourth grade, we have been working hard and learning all sorts of things.
We have been doing lots of writing. We wrote stories or novels in November for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). We wrote poems and made poetry books, and we have created picture books. Third and fourth graders reported on different planets and shared our information with the rest of the school. We used our research about planets to write choose-your-own adventure stories.
Third and fourth graders have taken several field trips this year!
This year, third and fourth grade has been reading, reading, reading! One of our favorite books this year was The Wild Robot. We had a robot party after finishing both of Peter Brown’s robot books, and we are hoping that he will write a third book in the series. We also like the Wayside School books and Beverly Cleary’s Motorcycle Mouse books.
We made our own edible robots after reading The Wild Robot!
We have been learning lots in math—both third and fourth graders have been working with fractions the last several weeks. We have had several special math days, including our Pi Day fun with the fifth and sixth grade. We learned about circumference and diameter and how to use pi in our calculations.
Third and fourth graders have really been enjoying our technology time. At the beginning of the year, we worked on coding and programmed using Scratch. Since Christmas break, we have been working on engineering projects from NASA. We created rockets and lunar rovers, and we’re programing our LEGO EV3 robots.
We have been learning about different countries around the world. So far we have learned about the United Kingdom, Peru, Egypt, and Israel. Mrs. Jensen shared some of her pictures from her trip to Peru with the class.
In science, we have been learning about the different types of energy. We love to do experiments to find out how things work in God’s wonderful world.
